The Parish of Bell Island

The Parish of Bell Island
St. Cyprians

History

The Anglican Parish Of Bell Island consists of two churches, The Church of St. Cyprian in Wabana, towards the front of the island, and the church of St. Mary in Lance Cove. These were built in the early 20th century, and were replacements for earlier structures. In the heyday of the Bell Island mines this was a prosperous and populous Parish. However, with the closing of the mines in mid 1960 the Town on Bell Island lost many of it’s citizens to places afar in search of employment. The Parish population declined correspondingly. The decline has continued, and consequently an honorary Clergy now serves the Parish part time. The style of worship has always been traditional, with almost sole use of liturgy from the Book of Common Prayer. Today we have both traditional and contemporary services, using The Book of Common Prayer, as well as The Book of Alternative Services, regularly. Everyone is welcome!
